Textual analysis of Q magazine and NME magazine

Q magazine April 2009:  The first thing i notice about the front cover of Q magazine is the big picture of the featured artist.  This will atract many people to further look at the magazine because the artist (in this case Lily Allen) is probably very well known and it will reflect on the calibre of the magazine.  The picture also looks very glossy and classy which will further improve the quality of the magazine.  There is a lot of text but it is well managed as it is spread out to avoid cluttering and comes in different fonts and colours keeping it looking interesting, lively but at the same time chock-full of information that's easy to digest.  Again, the simple colour scheme of grey, silver, black, blue and white (And of course the red Q) makes the magazine look great.

NME magazine March 2008:  The first thing that gets my attention on this magazine cover is the striking red, white and black colour scheme.  This would suggest that the magazine is a bit "in your face" and suggests that it is aimed at a teenage audience and probably focuses on rock music or similar genres.  The second thing i notice is the big picture of the two artists standing next to eachother in a rebelious-looking pose.  This further suggests that the magazine is aimed at a teenage audience but also that the magazine is quite famous as it can afford to do an interview with well-known figures in music.  The text in this magazine is often in a bold font and quite "in your face".  Although it looks as if their is a lot of text it is easy to digest and it comes in easy to read blocks with just the right amount of information to let you know what to expect inside.  The price (£2.20) is very small and in the corner so as not to attract the readers attention and pottentially put them off even though it is not a lot for a magazine.

Treatment sheet

The magazine:  Melon

Target Readership:  Melon is a fresh, new magazine unlike any other.  It combines genres of music that are becoming increasingly popular with today's teenage audience- Contemporary Pop, Traditional Pop, Swing and Big Band and Pop.  The reader of Melon magazine is aged between 16 and 24 but the magazine can also be easily enjoyed by adults of all ages.  The magazine will be easily affordable to the intended audience as they will probably have some sort of income (paper rounds, part-time jobs) and so they will not have to rely on parents to pay for the magazine.  The magazine is a new take on an ever-growing in popularity kind of music and will suit todays new breed of teenagers who instead of Rock and Metal are starting to enjoy the stylings of Michael Buble and Jamie Cullum more and more.  The average reader of Melon is hard-working, respectable, has a warm personality and above all, loves music.  Melon acts as a "role model" for teenagers and is for the person that wants to help in providing a brighter future for all in a world where change is desperately needed.

Form and style:  Melon is a very classy looking A5 sized magazine which contains interviews with various artists, both famous and up-and-coming.  It also contains information about bands, singers, actors and various others and also reviews, news, fashion, stories and important issues.  Covers will have a picture of the featured artist on it so people will know what will feature inside.  Colours to be used on the cover of Melon will be Dark blue, black, white, silver, grey and red.  Cover lines show that the magazine is entetaining, laid-back, classy, interseting and above all a good read which is just as good a magazine for those that are heavily into music and for those of which are just starting to.  The graphics used will be bold but not brash and will keep in code with the colour scheme.  There will be information on the cover of what to expect inside but to avoid a cluttered look on the cover information will be kept to a minimmum and will be in blocks spead around the page.  The magazine will sell at £3.40 which is a good price for a music magazine as good and informative as this.

Themes and Typical features:  Melon will have many typical features that will feaure every month.  Readers will be able to comment on the features and suggest new ones by writing into the editor who will personally read all letters sent in.  Typical features of which to expect are the editors column, the artists interview DPS, fasion corner, "On a serious note..." important issues DPS and the monthly competion to win various music-related items such as signes cd's.  The focus of the magazine is mainly on music, important issues and things affecting students such as EMA and university places, fees ect.  The magazine won't have that strong a reader influence but it is made clear that the readers can write in and suggest things that the Melon magazine creators can do to improve it.  The magazine might also feature TV, movie and game reviews depending on the popularity amongst readers.  The writers will use language which will be familiar to the reader, a relaxed and informal style.  But the magazine will always keep the proffesional feel in the look and the language.

Potential advertisers:  There will be a range of adverstisements in each issue of Melon magazine.  The usual advertisements that will be included in the magazine are Universities, fashion, music products (Amp's, CD's ), Aftershaves, possibly TV shows or/and movies and also mens hair products.

Editorial Team:  The editorial team behind Melon magazine are a mixture of both up-and-coming writers and designes and also experienced writers and editors.  This mix combines the fresh and new ideas of youth with the experience and in-valuable knowledge of the more experienced in the proffession.  The ages of the team members will vary and readers will be encouraged to contribute their ideas to help improve the magazine.  The overall aim of Melon magazine is to provide an entertaining magazine which covers both in-depth wider world issues and also music-related things whilst at all times keeping the magazine relaxed, informal, fresh and fun!

Magazine name

I have decided to call my music magazine..........................................................Melon!  And the music genre i have chosen is mainly pop/rock/indie but it will also regularly feature big band/pop sorta music- Michael Buble styled music.  This is what will makeit unique from other magazines as no other music mag really covers the genre.

Comparison of magazines

Magazine name: XXL
Price: £3.95
Pages: 122
Sample of advertisement:
Heineken lager beer advertisement.  Main picture is of a black man holding a heineken beer bottle and he is socialising with friends.  This makes the alcoholic beverage look like a sophisticated drink that is to be enjoyed with friends.  Colours used are green, white and black adding to the classiness of the advert.  The traditional slogan is situated at the top-middle of the advert "Give yourself a good name".
Sample of article:
Most articles are on rappers and hip-hop and there are big names such as Justin Bieber and Kanye West that will attract a lot of readers attention.  Articles are around 8 pages each but have only about 2 pages worth of writting and the rest features pictures of the featured artist.

Magazine name: Big Cheese
Price: £3.90
Pages: 102
Sample of advertisement:
Fat wreck chords advertisement.  Four main pictures each of them being a cd being sold.  Selling Metal/rock/punk music cd's which would appeal to the sort of people who would by this magazine in the first place.
Sample of article:
The Ramones are interviewed in this article and the interview itself seems reasonably formal for an informal magazine.  There is a lot of text as it is one of the highlights of the magazine.  The questions are predictable and none are deep and risky.  There is a big picture at the top of the article of the Ramones at the height of their career and "The Ramones" is in bold so it catches the readers eye.  The article keeps to the rock/punk "feel" of the magazine
